Elopiformes ist die Ordnung des Fisches des Strahls-finned, der die Atlantischen Tarpone, tenpounders, und ladyfish, sowie mehrere erloschene Typen einschließt. Sie haben eine lange Fossil-Aufzeichnung, die leicht von anderen Fischen durch die Anwesenheit eines zusätzlichen Satzes von Knochen im Hals bemerkenswert ist.

Sie sind mit der Ordnung von Aalen verbunden, obwohl die Erwachsenen Heringen anscheinend ähneln. Die Larven sind jedoch leptocephali, sehr ähnlich denjenigen von Aalen aussehend.
